© 'ISLAND SOUL'  Elbow Cay Reef Lighthouse Hopetown Abaco Bahamas Glicee on Canvas by Jan Peterson

The Story:
For 15 years I cruised and traveled through the Bahamas exploring the Out Islands. So many wonderful people I met and sights I saw. The Abacos, Marsh Harbour, Elbow Cay, Green Turtle Cay, Guana Cay, Man O' War Cay, The Exumas, Stocking Island, Nassau, Chub Cay and Southward.

This is a painting  of the Elbow Cay Reef Lighthouse in Hopetown on Elbow Cay. She is a beacon of safety for all making passages to and from the island. Her red and white candy stripes make easy to identify for sailors. The red stripes are visible by day and the white stripes visible after the sun goes down. Her light shines out 20 miles every 15 seconds. And, she is the last kerosene burning lighthouse in the World. She is a deep part of the islands soul and survived hurricane Dorian's 250 mph plus winds in 2019.

Like his father and grandfather before him, Jeffery Forbes Jr. climbs 101 steps each day to crank a hand winch 427 times every 2 hours. For the last keeper of the light, it's more a labour of love and less a duty. "
