GYOTAKU FISH PRINTS

Gyotaku is the Ancient Japanase Art Form Of Printing Fish As A Way To Record A Prize Catch

Gyotaku Fish Prints By Jan Peterson
Your Prize Fish Will Live On Forever!

I have always loved to fish.

It all started on Hatteras Island when I was 7 years old...and continues today.

Whether standing in the surf casting or wetting a line from my boat, there is the unknown and the anticipation of reeling in a fish. Part of the adventure is not knowing what might bite, then hooking,  fighting and successfully landing a fish. And, secretly we are all longing for the prize catch.

Fish have the most beautiful palette of colors and array of patterns.

I am mesmerized. The culmination of the watery adventure comes hours later when

filleting and preparing the fish.

There is nothing better than fresh fish blackened, sautéed or grilled.

And, now there is a new found joy, printing fish in the Ancient Japanese Art Form called Gyotaku.

Each print is unique as my hands slowly and carefully rub over each scale and fin from snout to tail.

If you would like a print of your record fish email me jan@outonthewater.com or

give me a call 252.725.4445

You can bring it to my shop and I will make a print of your fish so you have a

permanent memory of your fishing adventure and your prize catch!

I will need your fish that is perfect and intact so I can make an impression

with water based inks on Japanese rice paper. Please your fish on ice and not soaking in water.

If you're not a fisherman but love the beauty of fish, I have fish prints for sale at my shop.

Please contact me to arrange an appointment to meet me at the shop.

American Red Snapper

All of my fish are printed on beautiful Japanese rice paper. Each fish takes several printings in advance of the final print to turn the ink and impression into a gorgeous piece of art. The inks I use are

water-based so your fish may be enjoyed after the print is complete. All of my prints are original,

signed, dated and stamped with my Hanko.
